What’s it about?
Staying and looking young is not an easy task and a lot of woman are constantly looking for the latest wonder in beauty cream to stop then from looking older. Have you ever wondered how these creams work to help prevent people from looking older?
‘Vitamin E’ is a popular ingredient in anti-aging creams, because it slows down the chemical process called ‘oxidation reduction reactions’ in the cell membranes of human skin or other organic matter. We can test this with rose petals in the following science experiment:
What will I need?
- 3x PLASTIC BAGS
- 3x ROSE PETALS
- TAP WATER
- MAGIC MARKER
- VITAMIN E CAPSULES
How does it work?
Living organisms produce free radicals and anti-oxidants on a continuous basis. Free radicals are like rust to metal which cause oxidation to skin cells, and the degeneration of living tissue. Anti-oxidants, on the other hand, fight and prevent free radicals from harming body tissue at the cellular level.
Vitamin E contains powerful anti-oxidants and being fat-soluble, is the primary antioxidant against free radical damage to lipids, including those that make up cell membranes. It anchors itself in the membrane and traps free radicals attempting entry into the cell. As an organism ages, levels of vitamin E decline just as other antioxidant defences break down, hence supplementing it with Vitamin E will extend the life time of such an organism or it’s skin.
