In this science experiment we will be learning more about electrical current, and how electrical circuits are useful to us in our everyday lives. Many electrical devices are used in the security business these days, for example burglar alarms, electric fencing, access control systems and many more. In the following science experiment we will build a device that can detect intruders in front of your room:

How does it work?
Unfortunately, this section is only available in the e-book version of the project.
The power or ‘electrical energy’ stored in a battery can only be released and allowed to flow when a complete circuit is made out of wires or other ‘conductors’ that conduct electricity. In the above experiment, when someone steps on the mat pressing the two aluminium pieces ‘conductors’ together, a complete circuit is made from the positive (+) terminal of the battery to the negative (-) terminal of the battery. The current flows from the battery through the ‘detector’ under the mat and the buzzer in your room. When the circuit is complete and the current is flowing, the buzzer sounds to warn you of a possible ‘intruder’.
