What’s it about?

Meteorologists make use of the wind for making precise weather forecasts. The wind direction tells them what kind of weather they can expect and the wind speed in turn give them an indication as to how soon that weather is going to reach us.

An anemometer is an instrument helping us to measure the wind speed. An anemometer has a rotor that spins or turns when the wind blows. The faster is turns, the higher the wind speed is. Build one in the following science experiment:

How does it work?

Unfortunately, this section is only available in the e-book version of the project.

Your anemometer consists of 4 hemi-spherical cups that catch in the wind and are then rotated around a base. The faster the wind blows, the more pressure is pushed against the cups and the faster the rotor will turn. The wind speed is then calculated by counting the number of complete turns made by the cups within a fixed amount of time.
