What’s it about?

Sound is all around us and it is very important to us. We use sound to communicate with other people, to express feelings and exchange ideas and information. Sound waves can be reflected and when you are in a concert hall, you hear sounds bouncing from the walls and ceiling, often resulting in an enriched quality of sound. Test the reflection of sound with umbrellas in the following science experiment:

How does it work?

Unfortunately, this section is only available in the e-book version of the project.

In this science experiment the sound of the ticking watch bounces against the inside of the umbrella to which it is attached, and travels in the opposite direction. The sound waves then strike the inside of the opposite umbrella and bounces off in the same direction. The shape of the umbrella causes the sound waves to be focused, and hence amplified on a single point along the handle.
