What’s it about?

Microorganisms, also called ‘fungi’, live around us and we come into contact with it every day. Microorganisms are microscopically small and in most instances we do not even know that they are there.

Fungus keeps reproducing, and can also grow very large in favourable conditions such as on rotting food. We know this as mold. Many different types of fungi exist around us, let’s see how many types we can grow in the following science experiment:

How does it work?

Unfortunately, this section is only available in the e-book version of the project.

This science experiment works because ‘fungi’ grow well in environments that have enough nutrients and plenty of moisture, such as food that has been kept too long or that has been left in moist conditions such as in this experiment. Fungi grow well on most kinds of bread, fruits and vegetables and are usually visible as a white fuzzy growth on the food. Fungal growth on food usually begins with ‘spores’, which is always present in the air, landing on unprotected food. Once a spore lands on food, and the conditions are right, it will germinate and begin to send out fungal cells that spread out and absorb nutrients from the food surface called ‘hyphae’.

In this experiment we create a colourful fungi garden because the mold spores are often colourful and can be brown, grey, black, or just about any shade of green, yellow, pink, or red.
