What’s it about?

Usually, to create a representation of a magnetic field, we use a bar magnet, some iron filings and a white sheet of paper. This, however, is only a two dimensional representation of what a magnetic field looks like.

The truth is that magnetic lines of force actually move outward in space in many directions and not just along a flat surface. In this science experiment, you will suspends some iron filings in mineral oil to allow you to see a more realistic representation of the lines of magnetic force:

A magnet is a metal object that attracts pieces of ferrous (metal) objects. Magnets always have a north and a south pole. The iron filings get stuck near the ends of the magnets only because the magnetic force or ‘magnetism’ is strongest near the poles. The three dimensional magnetic field appears because the iron filings are attracted to the opposite poles of the magnets on either side of the jar.
