How does it work?

Unfortunately, this section is only available in the e-book version of the project.

The taste of a specific type of food, for example an apple or a steak, is a result of three of your senses at work. These are: Vision (Seeing the food), Smell (Smelling the aroma of the food) and of course Taste. It is especially the smell of food that sets the salivary gland working to produce saliva. The saliva helps to dissolve the food when eaten and only then can it be tasted properly. In this experiment your friend cannot see or smell the food hence very little saliva is produced and makes the tastes of the foods confusing.
