What’s it about?

Have you ever wondered how a sailboat can seemingly turn in any direction even though the wind only comes from one side? Let us do the following science experiment to better understand how a sailboat harness the power of the wind or ‘moving air’ to move about and how it changes direction:

How does it work?

Unfortunately, this section is only available in the e-book version of the project.

In this science experiment, wind or ‘moving air’ is used to power the boat as it pushes against the ‘sail’ of the boat. The direction that a sailboat travels depends on both the direction that the wind is blowing and the direction that the boat is steered. The wind pushes the sail of the boat in one direction, while the boat’s rudder uses the water to exert a force in the same or different direction when ‘steering’ the boat with the nail. The combination of these two forces determines the direction that the boat is going in.
