Graft two separate types of plants together

Suitable For

Grade 4

Time Required

What’s it about?

Many ‘hybrid’ fruits such as ‘nectarines’ which is a combination of a peach and plum fruit, did not exist about 100 years ago. Botanists are people that study the science of plants. These scientists can ‘graft’ together many types of fruit plants to create an entire new type of fruit, that might be sweeter or that might be more suited to a specific climate. In this science experiment you will graft together a tomato and a potato plant:

How does it work?

In this science experiment, two plants are combined or ‘grafted’ together to form a new type of plant. Today many types of ‘hybrid’ fruits exist – this is a complex process where new fruits are created from two existing types of fruits, with qualities of both the original types of fruits. Although you did not truly create a new type of fruit, such as a ‘pomato’, you still created a plant that bears two separate types of fruit. This ‘new’ plant produces tomatoes above the ground, and potatoes below the ground!
