What’s it about?

Many plants can be grown into maturity without any soil at all. Growing plants in water instead of soil is called hydroponics, and it’s a fascinating type of horticulture. The technique of ‘hydroponics’ were developed by Russian scientists in the 1980’s. Hydroponics sounds complicated but is in fact nothing more than the practice of growing plants in a water solution to which nutrients have been added. Try the following science experiment:

How does it work?

Unfortunately, this section is only available in the e-book version of the project.

In this science experiment, the ‘cut’ ends of the vegetables are nourished by the liquid fertilizer and water and sprouts are forming at the top. Eventually though, your hydroponic ‘plants’ will need more nutrients and nitrogen that is available in the water and liquid fertilizer. At this point, these ‘plants’ will need to be replanted in regular soil to keep them healthy.
