Have some fun with the science of levers

What’s it about?

A ‘lever’ is one of the earliest and simplest machines known to mankind. A ‘lever’ consists of a rigid object that is supported at a set point called a ‘fulcrum’. A machine is a device that helps us to do work more easily and it can be as simple as a wheel or as complicated as a sports car.

Machines help us do ‘work’ by exerting a push or a pull force on an object. ‘Work’ is done when such an object ‘moves’ as a result of the pushing or pulling force. Let’s have some fun with a simple ‘lever’ system in the following science experiment:

How does it work?

Unfortunately, this section is only available in the e-book version of the project.

In this science experiment the spoon placed first is used as a ‘lever’ to move the second spoon. The bowl of the first spoon acts as the ‘fulcrum’ at the point where it touches the table and the same spoon’s handle acts as the ‘lever’. When the bowl of the first spoon is hit, the force of the impact causes the handle of the spoon to do ‘work’. This ‘work’ causes the second spoon to move and flip into the plastic bowl.
