Know from which direction the wind is blowing with a wind vane

Suitable For

Grade 6

Time Required

 <2 Days

What’s it about?

The wind is an important tool for meteorologists in making precise weather forecasts. The wind direction tells them what kind of weather they can expect, and the wind speed give them an indication as to how soon that weather is going to reach us. The ‘wind vane’ is an instrument helping us to find out from which direction the wind is blowing. Build one in the following science experiment:

The surface area of the arrow design is unequal, which enables the smaller area to turn into the wind. The weight is however equally spread on both sides of the axis of rotation, to allow the wind vane to spin freely. The small end points in the direction from which the wind is coming and the larger end points where the wind is going. The card indicating the directions must be calibrated with a compass hence the directional markers allow you to identify the wind direction easily.
