What’s it about?

A ‘chemical reaction’ sounds like a very complicated thing, but in fact it is simply the breaking apart of substances to form new substances. We use chemistry in our lives everyday, and even our bodies make use of chemistry to function! Try the following science experiment to see how chemistry can be utilized to make glue:

How does it work?

This science experiment is an example of a simple chemical reaction. Two substances, milk and vinegar, were combined to make a new substance: glue. The vinegar (acid) is used to make the milk sour breaking it down into two substances, ‘curds’ and ‘whey’. ‘Curds’ is a protein found in milk called ‘casein’. When baking soda is added to the curds, another ‘chemical reaction’ is created with the remaining vinegar. As a result, a new substance is formed called ‘casein glue’ which is a sticky protein.
