What’s it about?

Can you imagine how different our lives would have been if it weren’t for simple machines that we use everyday? A ‘lever’ is one of the earliest and simplest machines known to mankind. A ‘lever’ consists of a rigid board or bar that is supported at a set or ‘fixed’ point, called a ‘fulcrum’. Let’s put a simple ‘lever’ to good use in the following science experiment:

How does it work?

Unfortunately, this section is only available in the e-book version of the project.

This science experiment works because of the ‘lever’ system. The magic marker acts as the ‘fulcrum’ and the rigid ruler acts as the ‘lever’. The lever allows you to use less force to lift the book than would be necessary if you lift the book with your hands normally. By placing the pen at different locations under the ruler (ie: moving the fulcrum) the force necessary to lift the book would vary significantly. Notice that by placing the ‘fulcrum’ (the pen) closest to the book makes for easier lifting.
