What’s it about?

Have you ever watched a hot-air balloon and wondered how they stay up in the air so gracefully? Let’s build our own hot-air balloon in the following science experiment and learn how these magnificent flying machines work:

How does it work?

In this science experiment, the air molecules move faster and further apart as the air inside the plastic bag is heated. This causes the air in the bag to become lighter as it is less dense. The lighter air naturally rises and the bag lifts off. When the bag floats too high and away from the source of heat, the air in the bag cools down again and becomes heavier. When the ‘weight’ of the air inside the bag is equal to the ‘weight’ of the surrounding air again, the balloon will start to descent as gravity takes over.
