How does it work?

This science experiment works because household electric meters are typically regulated in billing units, the most common one being the kilowatt hour. Periodic readings of electric meters by local authorities are used to establish billing cycles and energy used during a cycle. One kilowatt hour is equal to the amount of energy used by a load of 1000 Watts over a period of one hour, or 3,600,000 joules.
