What’s it about?

You might be surprised as to how many ways there is of overcoming the pull of the earth’s gravity and making water flow upwards. One of the ways is to use the ‘weight’ of the ambient air or ‘air pressure’. If it would be possible to measure the mass of all the air in a large room of your house, you will be amazed that it can weigh as much as a person or about 70kg. Lets see how this ‘air pressure’ can be utilized to make water move upwards into a drinking glass, with this science experiment:

The surrounding or ‘ambient’ air pushes down on all objects all the time. In this science experiment, air pushes down on the surface of the water and this force is large enough to cause some of the water to be pushed up into the drinking glass. The effect of this experiment will be most impressive at sea level, because the air at sea level is the most ‘dense’ and therefore has the most ‘weight’ or ‘air pressure’ pushing down on an object.
