What’s it about?

Did you know that sound can be used to study the shapes of objects when one cannot directly see it? Scientists make use of ‘echo-location’ or ‘sonar’, by sending out a sound wave towards a distant object, and calculating the time it takes to return to them when bouncing off the object.

Ship captains often use this technique to map the ocean floor below the ship to look for dangerous obstacles ahead. You and a friend can simulate the process of ‘echo-location’ and mapping in the following science experiment:

How does it work?

Unfortunately, this section is only available in the e-book version of the project.

In this science experiment we create a graphic representation of the simulated ‘ocean floor’ which your friend created with his random ‘pings’ and ‘echo’s’. By connecting the dots plotted on the graph paper, you have transformed the numerical data into a graphical illustration of the imaginary topography of an ocean floor.

Like the sound of it?
