What’s it about?

In this experiment we will create a dramatic coloured fountain by using two jars of water, one with hot water and one with cold water. The hot water in the bottom jar wants to rise to be above the cold water, in the process making a spectacular colour fountain.

How does it work?

Unfortunately, this section is only available in the e-book version of the project.

When a fluid (the hot water) is heated it expands. This means that the same mass takes up more space so it is by definition less dense. The surrounding fluid stays at the same density so the warm fluid rises. The hot water quickly rises from the lower glass jar into the top jar replacing the cold water. This creates a dramatic fountain effect with beautiful colours.
