What’s it about?

Hummingbirds are truly some of the most amazing creatures on the planet, and they differ from other birds in a variety of ways. Hummingbirds must feed almost constantly, because they spend almost all of their time flying and thus also have poorly developed feet. Hummingbirds can consume up to twice their body weight in nectar every day. You can observe these fascinating birds in action by making a hummingbird feeder for your garden in the following science experiment:

How does it work?

Unfortunately, this section is only available in the e-book version of the project.

The hummingbird feeder in this science experiment relies on the atmospheric pressure to keep most of the sugar water inside the bottle, with just enough travelling to the tips of the straws to attract the hummingbirds. By screwing the cap on the bottle, the air pressure inside the bottle was decreased, whereas without the cap, the atmospheric pressure exerted in the liquid inside the bottle was more, and the water overflowed out of the tips of the straws. As the hummingbirds feed, more of the sugar-solution travels to the tips of the straws without causing it to overflow.
