What’s it about?

‘Gravity’ is the force with which the earth attracts bodies near its surface. All objects have weight because the earth’s gravitational force pulls on them. The greater the pull of gravity on an object, the more it weighs. In this science experiment we will be studying the weights of various objects by building a spring scale:

The scale in this science experiment works because rubber bands have potential elastic energy stored inside them, which resists the pulling force or ‘gravity’ of the earth when it is stretched. How much such an elastic band can be stretched or ‘pulled apart’, is directly proportional to the amount of pull force or ‘weight’ applied to it. Because the ‘stretch’ of the elastic band is directly proportional to the weight of an object, it is thus possible to use the rubber band and scale card to measure the weight of various objects.
