What’s it about?

This is a real fun science experiment where we will learn how elastic energy is converted into kinetic energy! Elastic energy is the potential energy stored in a material when its shape is changed. This potential energy can be very useful when it is converted into other forms of energy, to do work, or have some fun with it as in the following project:

  • LARGE TIN CAN WITH PLASTIC LID
  • HAMMER
  • STRONG RUBBER BAND
  • 2x NAILS
  • METAL WASHERS & NUTS

How does it work?

This science experiment works because rubber bands have stored potential elastic energy, which is then converted into kinetic energy by twisting or stretching it. In this experiment the rubber band is wound up by rolling the can forward. Kinetic energy from the rolling can is then converted to stored elastic energy in the rubber band. When the can stops rolling, the kinetic energy is used up and all the energy is now stored in the wound up rubber band. The stored potential energy is then released, as the rubber band winds down and this is again converted into kinetic energy causing the can to roll back to you!
