Make colours vanish to white by a spinning colour wheel

Suitable For

Grade 5

Time Required

 <12 Hours

What’s it about?

A rainbow is produced by the sunlight shining onto droplets of moisture after rains. The rainbow take the form of a multi-coloured arc containing the seven colours of the rainbow, with red on the outer part of the arc, and violet on the inner section of the arc.

A rainbow can also be artificially produced by passing white light (sunlight) through a prism. The light passing through the prism also makes up the seven colours of the rainbow. The opposite can also be done and in this experiment we will turn the colour spectrum of the rainbow back into white light.

How does it work?

Unfortunately, this section is only available in the e-book version of the project.

When the disc is spinning the colours on the disc are really close together and our eyes do a nice job of ‘averaging’ the colours out. It is actually the colours of the rainbow that create the white light and not the other way around! In this science experiment we perceive the 6 colours as white, in the same way that the 7-rainbow colours of a rainbow is also actually white light.
