How does it work?

In this science experiment, air molecules are pushed together or ‘compressed’ when you blow on the straw as hard as you can. The compresses air applies pressure to the bag as it wants to fill a larger volume causing the ‘book’ or other weights placed on top of the bag to rise. When a fluid (gas or liquid) is pressed together by force in a closed container, the force is spread equally to all parts of the fluid. This is explained by ‘Pascal’s principle’ and is the same principle at work when a bicycle tyre is inflated or when a football is pumped up.
