Make use of the power of air pressure to lift objects

Suitable For

Grade 1

Time Required

 <1 Hour

What’s it about?

The air around us has a lot of power and can be very useful too! The surrounding or ‘ambient’ air pushes down on our bodies all the time, but because it pushes down on us from all sides, we cannot feel it! Try making an air pump in the following science experiment and learn how useful, as well as powerful, air pressure can be:

How does it work?

Unfortunately, this section is only available in the e-book version of the project.

In this science experiment, air molecules are pushed together or ‘compressed’ when you blow on the straw as hard as you can. The compresses air applies pressure to the bag as it wants to fill a larger volume causing the ‘book’ or other weights placed on top of the bag to rise. When a fluid (gas or liquid) is pressed together by force in a closed container, the force is spread equally to all parts of the fluid. This is explained by ‘Pascal’s principle’ and is the same principle at work when a bicycle tyre is inflated or when a football is pumped up.
