What’s it about?

New paper is made from soft-pulp trees that is cut down and sawed into bolts for processing. These days, up to 40 % of paper is recycled to make new paper worldwide. For this science experiment, we will make use of old newspapers to make paper and therefore we will actually be recycling existing paper instead of making brand new paper:

How does it work?

Unfortunately, this section is only available in the e-book version of the project.

Paper mainly consists of wood pulp or ‘lignum’. In this science experiment we made new recycled paper from old newspapers. The shredded newspaper breaks up further into tiny fibres when cooked, and a kind of paper soup is formed. As soon as the water is removed, the fibres lock together or bond with each other again.

In professional paper manufacturing, other ingredients such bonding liquids, starches and stains are added to strengthen the locking of the fibres, making the paper stronger, more flexible and easier to fold.
