What’s it about?

Jewellers make use of rock tumblers to imitate the natural abrasion of rocks in nature to become shiny polished stones. Natural abrasions of rocks usually take place when water rushes against rocks and when it gets swept along in a current. It is easier to see the abrasion when a soft rock like limestone is used, but for this science experiment plaster cement will work just as good:

How does it work?

Unfortunately, this section is only available in the e-book version of the project.

This science experiment works because the rocks inside the ‘tumbler’ collide with each other in the water. Small pieces of the rocks break off and mix with the water to become part of the abrasion process. This sandy water acts like a kind of sandpaper to even further smooth the rocks.
