What’s it about?

Can you think of an easy way to get a relatively accurate estimate of your school-hall’s ceiling height? There are many fascinating ways of determining the height of a ceiling without having to physically measure its height with a tall ladder and measuring tape! Perhaps if you knew the height of a certain element within the hall, you could use the science of ‘proportions’ to do some careful estimating of the rest of the distances:

In this science experiment, you can calculate your school hall’s ceiling height by using the ‘proportion’ of your friend’s height in relation to the full height of the ceiling. Since you know the height of your friend, and you also know that the ratio of your friend’s height to the full ceiling height is about 4:1, you can quite accurately determine the height of the ceiling by multiplying your friend’s height by four!
