What’s it about?

Did you know you can make silver foil balls dance about to the rhythm of a CD track….Well not exactly; you can however make the balls dance around on top of the CD disk with a science phenomenon called Static electricity. In the following science experiment we will explore how:

How does it work?

The rule for static electricity is that different (opposite) charges attract, while the same (equal) charges repel one another. The above scenario happens because the silver foil balls become electrically charged themselves as the touch the disk and because they have the same electric charge, they repel one another and that is what sets them in motion making it look as if they are dancing on the disk’s surface.
