What’s it about?

Mummification was a way to preserve the bodies of kings and queens and other rich and famous persons back in the ancient times. The most famous and well known culture for preserving the dead through mummification was the ancient Egyptians who buried their pharaohs with all their belongings in pyramids.

The fact is: mummies have been found all over the world including the Aztecs in Peru in South America and as far east as China. ‘Natron’ is a natural salt that was used in the mummification process to dry out the bodies’ where after the bodies would be wrapped in bandages. Try to mummify an orange in the following science experiment:

In this science experiment the baking powder acts as a desiccant and removes all the moisture out of the orange, which makes it difficult for bacteria to grow. Without the water and bacteria, the orange cannot decompose, so it just shrivels and dries up. The other orange, still containing a lot of moisture and bacteria, decomposes and is not preserved.
