What’s it about?

You can have a lot of fun by making a ‘speed’ boat that is invisibly driven by soap. In this science experiment we will be making a ‘power’ boat that is driven by the forces that exist on the surface of a body of water. This is known as surface tension:

How does it work?

Unfortunately, this section is only available in the e-book version of the project.

This science experiment works because of the forces that exist on the surface of a body of water (liquid). This is known as surface tension and it act, or pull, around anything floating on the surface of water. The soap at the rear of the boat reduces the surface tension and thus stops the surface forces pulling at the back of the boat. The surface forces pulling at the front get the upper hand and the boat is pulled forward.
