How does it work?

This science experiment works because the broom handles and rope has been put together to form of a common device called a pulley system, a simple device that magnifies perceived effort or pull forces. A pulley will help you lift a heavy load with little effort, in this case overcoming the heavy load (the big pull force of your two friends) with little effort (The little pull on the end of the rope).
