What’s it about?

Did you know that you breathe in and out about 24000 times a day? Without the oxygen humans and other living organisms breathe in every day, we will not have been able to survive. When you breathe air in, oxygen is extracted out of the air and in your lungs, and is then passed into the bloodstream. At the same time carbon dioxide (Co2) from the bloodstream passes into the air that is breathed out. This breathing process in all living organisms is called respiration.

An adult’s lungs can hold about 5 litres of air when fully breathing in – How much air do you think your lungs can hold? With the following science experiment you can find out!

How does it work?

As you blow the air volume your lungs can hold into the jar, the same amount of water is displaced out of the jar. If you want to accurately measure the air (in litres) that your lungs can hold, gently remove the tube and hold you hand tightly over the mouth of the bottle once again and turn it the right way up. Pour the remaining water into a measuring jug and subtract this reading from 5 Litres (The capacity of the jar) this is your lung capacity in litres.
