What’s it about?

Even through powerful celestial telescopes, we still find it hard to focus on a distant object such as a star in the sky. Stars are in fact so far away from the earth, that when you look up at the stars in the sky, you don’t see the stars, but rather only the refraction patterns of their light millions of kilometers away. In this science experiment we will simulate the refraction patterns of faraway stars by viewing tiny lights through a nylon stocking:

How does it work?

When the pinpoints of light coming from the flashlight / cone are viewed in a dark area through a piece of nylon, it has a familiar star-like shape. This star-line shape, complete with pointed rays and pronounced halos, happens because our eyes struggle to focus on the lights when it is ‘refracted’ through the piece of nylon. This allows us to successfully simulate the view we have of the stars in the sky.
