What’s it about?

Air is all around us, but it is difficult to investigate because we cannot see or touch it. However, you can feel air when it moves, and we can also observe the effect air has on other things. Air makes grass or trees sway, moves the clouds around or trap water in a funnel by filling spaces that we perceive as empty. We will use the last example to illustrate this, in the following science experiment:

How does it work?

In this science experiment, the bottle which is already full of air even though it cannot be seen, is sealed off with modelling clay to prevent the air from escaping. When the water is poured into the funnel, it cannot flow into the bottle because it is already full of air and the water get ‘stuck’ inside the funnel. When a hole is made in the clay with a pencil, the air trapped inside the bottle escapes and the water rushes in to fill the space.
