What’s it about?

Even though we cannot see air, we know that it takes up space all around us – but how much does air weigh? Scientists use very complex weighing instruments to measure the mass of very light substances such as air. Make a simple balance in the following science experiment to weigh air:

In this science experiment, when the blown up balloon is tied back to the end of the stick, it makes the stick tip down. This indicates that the balloon filled with air weighs more than the empty balloon and that air is clearly heavier than a vacuum.
