What’s it about?

Elodea plants, also called ‘anacharis’, is the Latin name for a family of water weeds often used in aquariums and ponds. Elodea or other aquarium plants are a worthwhile addition to a fish tank, and will ensure the fish have better colours and live a more natural life. These types of plants do however require a lot of light to produce oxygen during photosynthesis. In this science experiment, study whether elodea plants produce more oxygen in stronger sunlight:

How does it work?

Green plants use light to convert it into energy in a process called ‘photosynthesis’. A plant takes in water and carbon dioxide through their roots and leaves, which is needed to form glucose, a sugar that living organisms break down to produce energy. Using energy from the sun or other light source, plants rearrange water and carbon dioxide to form sugar. When the elodea plant is placed in the sun lit area, it produces more oxygen as the process of photosynthesis happens faster, while the elodea plant in the room with low light does not produce as much oxygen, due to the lack of light for photosynthesis to take place.
