What’s it about?

It is important that the membranes around living cells are ‘semi-permeable’ to allow it to absorb nutrients and dispose of waste products. In this science experiment we will study the inward and outward flow of materials through the ‘semi-permeable’ membrane of a raw egg:

Egg shells are made from a substance called ‘Calcium carbonate’. When the egg in this science experiment is submerged in vinegar, it starts to dissolve the ‘calcium carbonate’ and releases ‘carbon dioxide’ gas in the process – hence the bubbles on the surface of the shell. After the eggshell has been completely dissolved, the semi-permeable membrane surrounding the egg white reacts to the vinegar and became more ‘rubber-like’. This is because some of the vinegar to passed through the eggshell and is also the reason for the larger appearance of the egg.
