What’s it about?

Even though we do not care for them, most of us have dealt with the common house fly. Flies can be extremely annoying, but at least they don’t bite you! They can also be extremely useful in demonstrating the effect cold weather has on the metabolism of living organisms, as can be seen in the following science experiment:

How does it work?

Unfortunately, this section is only available in the e-book version of the project.

In this science experiment, the fly’s metabolism is slowed down by placing it in a cold refrigerator. ‘Metabolism’ refers to the rate of the chemical processes that take place in a living organism. These processes also produce energy and hence, due to the cold of the refrigerator, the fly produces less energy and moves slower than it did before! As the fly warms up again, its metabolism and energy level returns to normal.
