What’s it about?

These days, everywhere you go you will find ‘electricity’ at work. Electricity is a form of energy that is very useful to us because it can easily be converted into many other forms of energy.

When a flash light is switched on, a simple electrical current is instantly completed as the ‘electrons’ flow from the batteries through the switch and bulb, and back to the batteries. The ‘switch’ to get the current flowing, can take on many different forms as can be seen in the following science experiment:

What will I need?

  • INSULATED COPPER WIRE
  • STIFF UNINSULATED WIRE
  • 9-VOLT BATTERY
  • 9-VOLT LIGHT BULB IN HOLDER
  • SCREWDRIVER
  • STICKY TAPE
  • SHOEBOX

How does it work?

Unfortunately, this section is only available in the e-book version of the project.

The power or ‘electrical energy’ stored in a battery can only be released and allowed to flow when a complete circuit is made out of wires or other ‘conductors’ that conduct electricity. In the above experiment, you do not have a complete electrical circuit unless you touch the ‘wire loop’ to the ‘wavy wire’. When the loop is touched against the ‘wavy wire’ by your unsteady friends, the electrical circuit is completed and the bulb lights up!
