What’s it about?

Can you hear a watch ticking more than a metre away, even when it is very quiet around you? I am sure you cannot. In a normal situation one will have difficulty hearing a watch tick more than a metre away because our ears are separated from the watch by air, which is not a very good conductor of sound. In this science experiment we will be testing common materials which is better conductors of sound, and will enable us to hear a watch tick more than a metre away:

Sound waves travel better in denser materials. Since the table is made of wood, which is denser than air, the sound waves travel better, enabling you to hear the watch tick from farther than you would be able to in normal air.
