What’s it about?

‘Polymers’ are compounds made of very long chains of molecules. Polymers often have ‘plastic’ or ‘rubber’ properties and can be formed with a ‘chemical reaction’, by mixing other substances together. A ‘chemical reaction’ is simply the breaking apart of substances to form new substances. Try the following science experiment to see how a chemical reaction can be utilized to make rubber out of glue:

How does it work?

Unfortunately, this section is only available in the e-book version of the project.

This science experiment is an example of a simple chemical reaction. Two substances, glue and Borax detergent, are combined, and as a result of the chemical reaction that takes place, a new substance with ‘rubbery’ properties is formed. When the glue is mixed with the Borax and water, it produces a rubber-like material called a polymer.

In simple terms, a polymer is a long chain of molecules. If the long molecules slide past each other easily, then the substance acts like a liquid because the molecules flow. If the molecules stick together at a few places along the strand, then the substance behaves like a rubbery solid called an ‘Elastomer’.  Borax is the substance that is responsible for fixing the glue’s molecules together to form the rubber-like material.
