What’s it about?

Have you ever seen an electronics engineer or a technician working with an ‘oscilloscope’? An ‘oscilloscope’ is a device that creates different kinds of curves, waves and lines on a screen according to the type of electrical signals being fed into the amplifier. Make you own type of non-electrical ‘oscilloscope’ that will display the shapes of various soundwaves on a blank wall in this science experiment:

How does it work?

Unfortunately, this section is only available in the e-book version of the project.

In this science experiment the vibrations of your vocal chords causes the air in the tin to vibrate. The air in the tin can, in turn then causes the rubber membrane with the mirror glued to it to vibrate correspondingly. The sunrays coming from the window, falls on the piece of mirror and is reflected to create patterns in the form of ovals, figure-eights and loops on the wall. The louder the sound, the more the air will vibrate the membrane with the mirror on it, and the larger the shapes created on the wall will be.

Like the sound of it?
