What’s it about?

The mineral ‘iron’ is an essential and an important component of proteins involved in oxygen transport and metabolism in our bodies. Almost two-thirds of the iron in your body is found in ‘hemoglobin’, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen to the various parts of your body.

Iron can be found in many types of foods, particularly in red meats, leafy vegetables and some fruits. Test some fruits in this science experiment to see how much iron they contain:

How does it work?

In this science experiment a chemical change takes place that produce dark particles in the juices that contain iron. We use the tea as an ‘indicator’ because when the tannic acid in the tea comes in contact with the juices that contain iron, it combines with the iron to form the dark particles.

Particles form the quickest in the pineapple juice, which contains the most iron per given volume. The particles form slower in the grape juice which contains less iron and no particles form in the apple juice as it contains no iron.
